Video: Donald Glover Debuts a Short Film Featuring Himself, A Porn Star, Some Other Rappers and Topanga

Sorry that was such a long headline, but Donald Glover has come out with a short film that he wrote and produced. It was directed by Hiro Murai (Drunk History, Funny or Die, Usher Music Vids etc.) and features Trinidad James, Chance the Rapper, Flying Lotus, Danielle Fishel (Topanga with a better hair color!!!), and Abella Anderson (who is apparently a porn star).

No one seems to know much about the film. It does preview some new tracks so it seems likely that it’s a promotional video for some new music Childish Gambino will put out. Consequence of Sound points out that at the beginning of July Donald Glover said he would be reducing his role on the NBC show Community in order to focus on music.

The Huffington Post doesn’t offer much information besides the fact that they apparently find the film “creepy,” don’t know how to spell Danielle (they wrote “Daniel Fishel, I’m not kidding), and misquoted Vulture saying “as Vulture puts it, a ‘mysterious woman played a porn star.'” When Vulture actually said: “the mysterious woman played by a porn star.” So cool Huffington Post, didn’t really kill it on this one. Next time.

Shockingly, the best write up was by Buzzfeed.

But this article isn’t about the Huffington Post so back to the film – As it seems pretty clear the media doesn’t know anything about it, the only feasible thing to do is to get all of your information from the Youtube comments. This is obviously the best route, so I’m doing it for you.

When a man bought his own freedom he would show off his freedom and his new found “wealth” by showing how many gold teeth he could buy.

Later on it became a status symbol of gambling men, bootleggers, musicians or any black person that didnt work for white people anymore. All this changed in the late 70s & early 80s when it became connected to drug dealers, robbers, & gangsters in the 90s to the present it is now worn as fashion & many people dont know its true history so they make fun of it.

This is actually helpful…assuming it’s true.

I came for abella.. if you know what I mean

And unsurprisingly creepy dudes jerked off to the porn star’s ten second appearance in an otherwise kinda deep film.

What the actual fuck. I’m pretty sure this would make more sense if I was high, but I’m not right now so I’m just confused.

The “common folk” obviously are like, so confused without the aid of Marijuana.

This is the biggest self wank I’ve ever seen.

Some people think this is self-promotional….which…gasp..IT PROBABLY IS.

This is so unbelievable. I mean, who has landline phones anymore ?!

GOOD QUESTION SARAH KELLY! People in Thailand or wherever they are most likely still have landlines. #firstworldcomments (unless they are in the Pacific Palisades like Buzzfeed says, but it looks too exotic if you ask me)

I really enjoyed this! I can see the nietzsche references all this. The Idea of being in paradise and the entire human experience being something that has no meaning resonates with me. If you think it’s bad just because you don’t understand it than thats too bad for you. You are missing out on a lot!

Someone finally understands what Donald Glover probably wanted you to understand or something.

Thank you….Zephyrtube, for that riveting and life changing commentary. I’m sure it will happen for you now.

Donald’s awesome, but it’s still really, really hard for me to take him seriously with his music and experimental film when I’ve watched all of the stuff he’s done with Derrick Comedy, Community and his stand-up. It just feels like two different Donalds to me. Also is it just me or does he start to look more and more like Danny Glover when he doesn’t shave?

This is a valid point. People often want to put someone in a box – “You are a comedic actor therefore you can only do comedic acting well.” There probably ARE two different Donalds. I mean, who is the same all the time? Still, I’m sure many people grapple with authenticity due to this common trope.

Personally I found the film to be interesting and mildly insightful. I think it might be a kind of parody on “deep non-sensical films.” Sure I don’t totally get it, but I found parts relatable and I like that. If you are willing to commit 24 minutes of your time to an indie promo video, I’d say it’s worth it. I liked the part where Topanga tells him about her dream and the commentary on the lemons, as well as the connect four game, and the exchange at the fire place about guns and homosexuality. Also I have this whole kind of fantasy about moving somewhere dirt cheap (aka Thailand) and living in a mansion with cool people and just doing creative shit for 3 months or something, which is basically what he is depicting. That’s why I would be really disappointed if it’s actually just the Pacific Palisades.

It will be interesting to compare this to Lana Del Rey’s upcoming promo film “Tropico.” Probably not going to be quite as deep.
