Cuisine: Modern American
Address: 85 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11249
They say the Hipster movement began here – A little building that looks like a trailer inside called only “Diner” that serves upscale modern American cuisine. I don’t know if that’s true, what I do know is that it’s delicious. The atmosphere is definitely a weird one. You’re getting gourmet dishes at prices that are certainly not diner prices in a place filled with hipsters and paneled like a trailer. But it’s cool. And that’s what matters right?
Basically Diner works like this: the menu changes everyday, there’s no physical menu, instead there’s paper on your table like at Macaroni Grill for the kids to draw on with crayons. Only you don’t get any crayons, you just have to sit there with no menu. Then your waitress will come and write down what the menu is. Only you better have a good memory because she will only write down things like “Beef <3” and you have to remember what the beef heart came with or you’ll have to ask her to repeat it a thousand times. You also don’t know what the prices are, so it’s a bit of a leap of faith.
That being said, the food is always good. It’s not cheap but it’s definitely an experience. I also recommend brunch here although again, it’s not cheap. There is also an outdoor patio you can sit at which makes it ideal for warmer days if you don’t feel like being in the interior. The interior is kind of dark, which makes it ideal for hangovers.
Salad Frise`: This is a salad. It is called Frise. I don’t know whats in it except homemade croutons and a duck egg on top. I also know it tasted exceptionally good for being a salad. As I am utterly not a salad person.
Grilled Grapefruit: This was interesting. it depends on how much you like the smokey grill taste. It’s a weird sour/sweet/smokey taste but it was cool to experience
Biscuit with Lavender Spread: This was bomb. A big flaky biscuit with butter and a lavender cream. mmm
Diner is good for unique eats and a unique experience. You’ll pay for it, but it’s worth it.
