The Weeknd is back in the game. The first release, Kiss-land, meets all of my expectations. I wish I could explain the Asian background to you, but I got nothing. Korea is becoming such a thing in indie music, past just Phoenix even. Additionally, my friend Alison wants you all to know that this is Japanese lettering, but I just called it an Asian background, not a Korean one. That’s a separate statement.
It’s a weird way to describe it, but the way The Weeknd is kind of talk-singing almost sounds like when Lana Del Rey does her sweet little talk-sing thing in National Anthem: “You can meet me in the room^ where the kisses ain’t free” doing a little uptalk at the end of the sentences. The track additionally does not disappoint in drowning bass sounds.
Upon second listen, I’m super into this track. Listen a few times before judging.
